A James Bond-style action-adventure film for the tween and teen set based on Anthony Horowit! z's book "Stormbreaker," Alex Rider--Operation Stormbreake! r is a fast-paced action film shot in and around London that's bursting with suspense, intrigue, high-tech gadgetry, martial arts moves, and intense chase scenes featuring everything from cars and motorbikes to helicopters, quad bikes, bicycles, and horses. Alex Rider (Alex Pettyfer) thinks he's just an ordinary 14-year old kid, but when the uncle that raised him (Ewan McGregor) dies, he soon discovers that his uncle led a secret life as an intelligence agent and that he was secretly grooming Alex for a similar future with special intelligence division MI6. Motivated by revenge against his uncle's killers, Alex takes up where his uncle left off in the investigation of computer mogul Darrius Sayle (Mickey Rourke), delving into his seemingly philanthropic plan to supply a whole new breed of laptops to school children throughout the United Kingdom. Alex's undercover investigation quickly reveals Sayle's true motive and, without any real support or protection from his MI6 superviso! rs Alan Blunt (Bill Nighy) or Mrs. Jones (Sophie Okonedo) or his quirky housekeeper Jack Starbright (Alicia Silverstone), Alex must somehow prevail against the dangerous Mr. Sayle to safeguard the lives of thousands of innocent people. Comparable to Spy Kids and a step above Agent Cody Banks, Alex Rider--Operation Stormbreaker is an intense, believable film that will captivate viewers ages 10 and older. Bonus features include featurettes focusing on making the book into a film with author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, the extensive stunt work performed, the logistics involved in shooting a horse chase through Hyde Park and Piccadilly, visual effects by Baseblack, casting Alex, and the choreography of martial arts master Donnie Yen. --Tami Horiuchi(Adventure/Family) A 14-year-old is forced to become a secret agent and embarks on a thrilling adventure. The St. Francisville Experiment

  • Actors: Madison Charap, Troy Taylor, Ryan Larson, Paul James Palmer, Tim Baldini
  • Format: Closed-captioned, Color, DVD, Full Screen, NTSC
  • Language: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo) / Subtitles: English, Spanish, French
  • Region: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only)
  • Rated PG-13. Run Time: 79 minutes.
Inspired by a famous 1971 psychological experiment, Oliver Hirschbiegel's German-language movie The Experiment finds a group of 20 volunteers randomly divided into 12 prisoners and eight guards and asked to play out their roles for a fortnight while scientists study their reactions. A conflict arises between undercover reporter Fahd (Moritz Bleibtreu), a con with a hidden agenda, and the apparently mild-mannered Berus (Justus von Dohnanyi), a guard with a megalomaniac streak. The film begins as a psychological drama as ordinary people settle into the game, with jok! ing displays of resistance by the "prisoners" greeted with increasing brutality from the "guards," but detours into suspense and horror as Fahd, who needs the experiment to get out of hand in order to make his story more saleable, deliberately ratchets up the tension between the factions only to see the situation spiral nightmarishly out of control as various test subjects in both camps edge closer to snapping.

With a terrific display of ensemble acting and unforced use of the popular claustrophobic semi-documentary look, Hirschbiegel's movie takes its time to get underway, with apparently irrelevant cutaways to Fahd's outside girlfriend (Maren Eggert), but works up to a powerful second half that delivers a sustained symphony of psychological and physical anguish. --Kim NewmanOscar® winners Adrien Brody (Best Actor, The Piano, 2002) and Forest Whitaker (Best Actor, The Last King of Scotland, 2006) star in this mind-shattering psychological thrille! r from the creator of TV’s Prison Break. Selected to ! particip ate in a two-week research project, a group of men agree to play inmates and guards in a simulation of life within a state prison. But as the 24 volunteers slip deeper into their roles, power corrupts, fears escalate and the experiment spins horribly out of control. Cam Gigandet (Twilight), Clifton Collins Jr. (Crank: High Voltage) and Maggie Grace (TV’s Lost) co-star in this intensely shocking film. Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker star as ordinary men who find themselves transformed by strange circumstances in The Experiment. Tempted by a large paycheck, 26 men agree to be divided into prisoners and guards and placed in a mock prison for two weeks--but within a matter of days, these seemingly sane men have turned the mock prison into a sadistic pressure cooker. The Experiment is in part a remake of a German film, Das Experiment, which was inspired by a psychology experiment conducted at Stanford University in 1971--an experiment! sometimes cited as demonstrating an innate human capacity for sadism. But despite a strong cast--in addition to solid work from Brody and Whitaker, Clifton Collins Jr. (Capote) gives a typically strong performance--and some delving into several characters' back-stories, The Experiment never quite grabs hold. Still, there are compelling sequences and a creepily effective use of infrared cinematography. Also featuring Maggie Grace (Lost), Ethan Cohn (Gilmore Girls), Cam Gigandet (Twilight), and Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit). Directed by Paul Scheuring, the creator of Prison Break. --Bret FetzerInspired by a famous 1971 psychological experiment, Oliver Hirschbiegel's German-language movie The Experiment finds a group of 20 volunteers randomly divided into 12 prisoners and eight guards and asked to play out their roles for a fortnight while scientists study their reactions. A family memoir set against the shifting tides of twentieth-century China, The Girl from Purple Mountain begins with a mystery: the Chai family matriarch, Ruth Mei-en Tsao Chai, dies unexpectedly and her grieving husband discovers that she had secretly arranged to be buried aloneâ€"rather than in the shared plots they had purchased together years ago.

For many years, Ruth's family remained shocked by her decision and could not begin to fathom her motivations. Over time, they would fully understand her extraordinary story. Ruth was born in China at the beginning of the 20th century, during the reign of the last emperor. Educated by American missionaries, she was one of the first wome! n admitted into a Chinese university, during an era when most Chinese women were illiterate and had bound feet. She would defy tradition and refuse to marry the man her family had chosen for her, instead choosing his younger brother as her husband. Later, as the Japanese Army advanced across China during World War II, her foresight and quick thinking kept her family alive as she, her husband, and their three sons were forced to flee from city to city. In war-torn Chungking, she was Lady Mountbatten's interpreter as the Allies struggled to help China. After the war, the Chais immigrated to the U.S. to what seemed, until Ruth's death, a happier and more peaceful life.

In this extraordinary family epic, Ruth's first-born son, Winberg, and his daughter May-lee explore family history to reconstruct her life as they seek to understand her fateful decision. As Winberg writes: "It is my duty to try to understand my mother, to seek answers. To ignore the past is too much lik! e forgetting . . . I hope my memories are enough to fulfill a ! son's ob ligations."

Grindhouse (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

  • GRINDHOUSE SPECIAL BLU-RAY ED. (BLU-RAY DISC)
Together for the first time the Rodriguez/Tarantino Double Feature Grindhouse is back and better than ever! These rip-roaring and adrenaline-pumping films are now featured in the original theatrical exhibition format. Loaded with over 2 hours of bonus content, including the fan favorite Rodriguez's 10 Minute Cooking School this 2-disc Blu-Ray will deliver a new experience like never before!Loud, fast, and proudly out of control, Grindhouse is a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films fo! r an audience that may be too young to remember them. Tarantino's Death Proof is the mellower of the two, relatively speaking; it's wordier (as to be expected) and rife with pulp/comic book posturing and eminently quotable dialogue. It also features a terrific lead performance by Kurt Russell as a homicidal stunt man whose weapon of choice is a souped-up car. Tarantino's affection for his own dialogue slows down the action at times, but he does provide showy roles for a host of likable actresses, including Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rose McGowan, Sydney Poitier, and newcomer Zoe Bell, who was Uma Thurman's stunt double in Kill Bill. Detractors may decry the rampant violence and latch onto a sexist undertone in Tarantino's feature, but for those viewers who grew up watching these types of films in either theaters or on VHS, such elements will be probably be more of a virtue than a detrimental factor. Rodriguez's Planet Terror is a rol! licking horror/sci-fi/action piece about a plague outbreak tha! t turns citizens into cannibalistic murderers; it's heavy on the gore and explosions but also features a terrific cast of A players (Freddy Rodriguez, Naveen Andrews, Marley Shelton) and B-movie vets (Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Tom Savini) and the indelible image of Rose McGowan as a stripper whose torn-off leg is replaced by a high-powered machine gun.- Paul Gaita

If some kickass fashion and retail therapy help deliver those pearls of wisdom, who's going to complain?

The action centers on our! favorite BFFs, Jade, Cloe, Sasha, and Yasmin, starting high school together at Carry Nation High, and navigating through the rigid clique system that seems destined to force the girls apart. Along the way, there are fireworks (created by brainy Jade in chem class), food fights, and lots of cute guys to crush on. Ruling over all: Meredith Baxter Dimly, the Baby Doc Duvalier of high-school politics, somehow managing to be student-body president for at least three years running (maybe the fact that her pop is the principal has something to do with her anointment). Meredith, played to a scheming fare-thee-well by Chelsea Staub, is a formidable villain, but our girls realize nothing can come between true friends, if they just stick together. The climactic comeuppance scene--set at Carry Nation's annual talent show--will have Bratz fans clapping on their feet.

The film's soundtrack is upbeat and catchy, and features big names like the Black Eyed Peas and Ashlee Simpson, and ! the two show-stoppers sung by Staub as Meredith. And that's a !
